For many years Focus ST was the one of the best choices on the U.S. market when it comes to the hot hatches but it seams that the 2015 Ford Focus ST might be jeopardized with delivery of new 2015 Subaru WRX that will come to replace aging Impreza WRX.
In this segment we currently have pretty limited choice, at least for the U.S. market. Both Mazdaspeed3 and Subaru Impreza WRX were delivered few years ago and the age is starting to show on their design. Another vehicle in this category is the Golf R but its slow sales were not even close to jeopardize Focus ST and others in this segment.
With such a limited choice, for most drivers that were looking for a vehicle in this segment the Focus ST was the best choice. With powerful turbocharged engine that offers 252 hp we were getting one quite capable sporty vehicle. It was either this or if you wanted more that you could choose between Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X or Subaru Impreza WRX STI that were both rally inspired vehicles and too harsh for many drivers.
2015 Ford Focus ST
Both the 2015 Ford Focus ST and 2015 Subaru WRX comes with a similar price of less than $ 30.000 but also many similarities under the hood. Base price of WRX is $ 27.230 and for the Focus ST it is $ 24.910. We are getting turbocharged 2.0 liter engines under the hood but it will be interesting to see how those engines are used and which one offers more when it comes to performances and handling.
Looking at the figures the 2015 WRX offers 268 hp that is slightly more than 252 hp of Focus ST but on the other hand Focus ST comes with 270 lb-ft of torque that gives it an edge over the 258 lb-ft of torque from new WRX. Both uses six speed manual transmission while the weight advantage is again on the Focus ST side that weights about 3206 lbs compared to 3330 lbs of Focus ST.
Acceleration from 0 to 60 in Focus is done in about 6.2 seconds and this is mainly because of its front wheel drive that has a lot of traction problems due to the powerful engine. It will do 1/4 mile in about 14.7 seconds at 96.5 mph. Compared to WRX that accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds thankfully to its all wheel drive and does 1/4 mile in 14.0 seconds reaching 98.1 mph.
Many will notice that the acceleration of the 2015 WRX is significantly worse than the acceleration of the 2014 model and it is a new six speed manual transmission to blame for this. Previous year model reached 60 mph in about 4.7 seconds.
2015 Ford Focus ST Vs 2015 Subaru WRX
Acceleration and speed is not all that counts when it comes to performances. Another very important segment of these vehicles is the braking power and stopping range that is needed. WRX will stop from 60 mph to 0 in about 106 feet while the ST will need 112 feet. Cornering in ST will bring 0.95 G while the WRX comes with similar 0.96 G.
One thing where we are giving pretty huge plus to 2015 Ford Focus ST over Subaru is the interior. It comes with higher quality materials but also with the design that is significantly more interesting and allows this car maker to hide some of the lacks that it has. When it comes to exterior many will like the Focus more and we can agree with that but still WRX comes with a pretty classic looks that combines aggressive design with its powerful engine.
There are many things that were added to the both vehicles so you would be getting safer ride traction control, ABS, stability control and similar. When everything is turned off we are getting amazing driving experience from WRX while the ST is not that reliable on the road.
When we put everything into equation we can say that we are getting two quite similar vehicles when it comes to offer but they do deliver many differences. Even we do like what Ford has packed into its 2015 Ford Focus ST we need to say that the 2015 Subaru WRX might be a better choice for those that like to drive.
